USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine, commissioned by the U.S. Navy on September 30, 1954. Designed by John M. Burnham and built by General Dynamics' Electric Boat Division, it was launched on January 21, 1954, with First Lady Mamie Eisenhower christening the vessel. On January 17, 1955, Nautilus made history by signaling "Underway on nuclear power," marking its first voyage powered by its S2W nuclear reactor. On August 3, 1958, during Operation Sunshine, it became the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole. Decommissioned in 1980, Nautilus now serves as a museum ship at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
